OUT OF THE LONG BOX #015 – JUSTICE LEAGUE #28

Reviewed by Chris Fenn

Justice League #28 Gold
Now last issue I know I said I wasn’t looking forward to this and if I wasn’t obsessed with completion I would have stopped subbing to the series. I can safely say that this issue was much better than I expected, and a complete shift in tone from most of the other Forever Evil stories.

Most of the issue is a flashback told by Dr. Magnus; the creator of the Metal Men. Now as I said last week, I know very little about Cyborg and I know even less about Magnus and the Metal Men, so this origin flashback is new stuff to me!

Now I liked the comedy effect of the Metal Men, to me they behaved like something out of The Muppets and they really reminded me of the Gorgonites from Small Soldiers. I found all the personalities very fitting and also very endearing, and I loved that for all of his protests and bravado Mercury is programmed and willing to help humans at any cost.

Justice League #28 Metal Men
I do find some of the more child-like qualities to be really amusing and heart-warming. What really made me draw parallels to Small Soldiers, and by extension Toy Story, is the way the Metal Men revert to an almost mannequin like state when they are being inspected by the General, and revert to ‘themselves’ when they are with Dr. Magnus or in danger.

Adding to the fun of these characters I love how they hid out in Dr. Magnus’ apartment. Knowing Tin was hiding as a bin and assuming that the others were doing similar things just further drew me to Small Soldier and Toy story comparisons. It just stuck me as amazing how such powerful and intelligent beings could be so innocent and sweet.

I loved the resolution to the issue; the fact that Cyborg is willing to bring these beings back and seeing the attachment Magnus had for these creatures despite being so uncaring for other humans makes me want to root for them. I will love to see how the nicest characters in the DC Universe will fare against the most evil characters in the DC Universe; it wouldn’t surprise me if Magnus ends up getting his heart broken – either figuratively or literally.

Justice League #28 Magnus
This issue has gotten Justice League back in my good books, and I can’t wait to see what comes in Justice League #29: Forever Good!
