This is it! We finally get a hard hitting issue in this long drawn out event…at the expense of Spider-Man. The series finally seems to grow at heart, maybe because Spider-Man is the one telling the story here. We see all the events through his bruised, bloody eyes as the Phoenix Five grows stronger and takes down more Avengers each passing day. The X-Men seem to have finally come to their senses and realize that the Phoenix Five aren’t what they say they are and have become monsters…but it may be too late.

Artwork is great, as Colossus is beating Spider-Man to a pulp its like the reader can actually feel the punches through the pages.
The Positve
I really enjoyed reading this story through Spider-Man eyes, the character is able to add so much emotion to all the events that have transpired so far and it really sets up what happens later in this issue and makes it that much more impactful. Artwork is great, as Colossus is beating Spider-Man to a pulp its like the reader can actually feel the punches through the pages. The story is finally getting interesting as The Phoenix Five’s numbers are slowly dwindling, but with each fallen member the others gain a piece of their power and grow that much stronger. Emma Frost seems to have gone insane with the power of the Phoenix, but it’s Cyclops who is still by far the scariest because of the power he has and the fact that he has a plan….which makes him very dangerous.

The Phoenix Five’s numbers are slowly dwindling, but with each fallen member the others gain a piece of their power and grow that much stronger as Thor finds out!
The Negative
This event has kind of felt like its being going on forever, it’s finally getting interesting but it’s only because we are reaching the end and they must up the excitement a little. I do feel a little betrayed too, as this is supposed (or was supposed to) be a Hope story but she’s kind of fallen out of the picture. Don’t get me wrong, most of the plot does revolve around training her and keeping her safe. But for someone whose supposed to be the Mutant’s last “Hope” it sure seems like she’s just another character.
The Verdict
The mood has very much changed as we are down to the last members of the Phoenix Five. There are some interesting side plots involving Hope, Spider-Man and Iron-Fist (and where the heck is Iron-Man) so let’s hope all these plots and storylines are addressed in the next three issues and 1000 tie ins.
4 out of 5 stars
