THE FRACKING SHIP #001 – FLASH #22

Review by Daniel Fishwick

If i could turn back time!

Writer/Artist: Francis Manapul
Writer/Artist: Brian Buccellato

As fickle as comic readers can be, the leeway for a three/four issue build up can often be wise, while writers and artists lay the foundations of their take on the characters or drill their way through existing mythology to get to their story. These are things which the current run of The Flash doesn’t require – there’s no need for determined nerd patience or a glossary of FlashNotes – you can gladly dive right on in and won’t regret it.

As good as the stories themselves have been in this Flash run, it’s difficult to deny that the artwork completely steals the show. There’s a kinetic feeling to each panel, so necessary for a Flash title and so well executed by Manapaul and Buccellato. The action fizzes across each page, throwing in unique page structures and beautiful splash page moments which all capture the power and speed of the hero.

It’s evident from each page how well linked the creative team are, with the tone of the story matching the artwork. Aside from the stunning action, the colours on the ‘real world’ scenes provide depth and a solid platform for the heroics that follow.

We’re also given more than just a glimpse of the Reverse Flash as he comes to the forefront as the main villain for this new arc. This isn’t a ‘match’ for The Flash, this is a genuine threat and one which enticingly sets up the next issue.

Add to this a striking, iconic cover (possibly the best on the stands this week) and no one could argue that they don’t get their money’s worth from Flash #22. Somewhere in the marketing melee of The New 52, Barry’s been buried but with issues such as this one that won’t be a problem for long.

Rating:8.5/10
