By Kyle Coleman

Dreams begin to become reality once you wake up and get going.

So I sat down tonight to put together a creator spotlight for Our Oni Press tribute week at Inter-comics.com and I did what I always do when I sit down at the computer…

I open my internet

And my homepage pops up

And yep, that just happens to be OniPress.com

Now I must admit I usually pay a brief glance and then move on with whatever it is I’m doing, but something happened to catch my eye…

Here’s the LINK

If you’ve clicked the link great – if not – please slap yourself in the face for me. THANKS!

What I linked you to was a post by Tom Shimmin, the Marketing Director at Oni Press. In the post he explains that Oni will be taking on interns and begins to list the details.

Kind of crazy, right?

You can get into Oni that easy…

This is just another one of those awesome things about Oni… Always about sharing prosperity.

Well, certainly not easy – but definitely a lot easier than someone like I would have ever thought.

Let’s be REAL! There are many names who work at Oni and I’m not talking creators, I’m talking about the people who orchestrate the symphony of pure comicmarket glory – that we know as Oni Press – the creator owned powerhouse of the WORLD.

This is just another one of those awesome things about Oni… Always about sharing prosperity.

Which leads me to ask YOU, my fine friends, will one of you take up the call? Will, you put everything else aside for your love of comics to make this internship a reality?

I also want to ask who will make this a reality not because it’s a “career” path but because it’s a way of life.

Dreams begin to become reality once you wake up and get going.

Shit. Last year I was 3,000 miles away from where I’m sitting right now.

You have to stand up and take what you want and be brave in the face of fear.

Now, after all those attempts to stir something quite awesome in your soul, I want only this one question actually answered: What would an internship at Oni Press mean to you?

ONI PRESS #1’s on Comixology!

First things first, here’s the link to the Oni Press section on Comixology. Now I’m going to list my Top Ten free comics and give you a quick sentence or two about each book.

To help you get those books downloaded and into your brain!

OKAY, HERE WE GO!!!

Lost At Sea by Brian Lee O’Malley

10. Lost At Sea by Brian Lee O’Malley @radiomaru – I really enjoyed this book and it was this book in particular that really made me understand that Oni wasn’t kidding when they said they believed comics could be used to tell any story.

Possessions by Ray Fawkes

9. Possessions by Ray Fawkes @RayFawkes – An incredibly fun comic to read! Gotta read it to believe it!

Bad Medicine by Nunzio Defilippis and Christina Weir

8. Bad Medicine by Nunzio Defilippis and Christina Weir @CWWeir – I’m a big fan of this dark and supernatural crime comic

Coldest City by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart

7. The Coldest City by Antony Johnston @antonyjohnston and Sam Hart – This is one of those comics that bring you back to getting lost in all those metal gear solid stories. SPY!

The Sixth Gun by Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt

6. The Sixth Gun by Cullen Bunn @cullenbunn and Brian Hurtt @brihurtt – YOU BETTER GO BUY THIS WESTERN COMIC! It’s better than anything your great granddaddy could have ever dreamed of. Hope you’re not afraid of spirits!

Wasteland by Chris Mitten and Antony Johnston

5. Wasteland by Chris Mitten and Antony Johnston @antonyjohnston – I’ve read every issue of Wasteland and it’s one of my all-time favorites. This first issue is 50 free pages long!

Courtney Crumrin & The Night Things by Ted Naifeh

4. Courtney Crumrin & The Night Things by Ted Naifeh @TedNaifeh – What can I say… Courtney Crumrin is a character you need to see to believe. What a great creation and filled with fantastic art.

Black Metal by Rick Spears and Chuck BB

3. Black Metal by Rick Spears @RickSpears and Chuck BB @ChuckBB – Dark Metal mayhem as these twins have you laughing all the way to hell.

One Soul by Ray Fawkes

2. One Soul by Ray Fawkes @RayFawkes – One Soul is an incredibly deep book and is beautifully poetic. Loved this book!

Guerillas Issue 1 and Guerillas V2 by Brahm Revel

1. Guerillas Issue 1 and Guerillas V2 by Brahm Revel @elrevel – Guerillas takes this honor. These books are everything that a comic should be. Brahm Revel knows how to take you away and put you amongst smoking chimps trained to kill. Very little comes close to Guerillas in my book.

So there you have it! That’s my list and tweet me out with your thoughts at @comicskyle on twitter.

All of my loyal and devoted readers know that I stopped doing reviews some time ago. When I first started out I was very much into doing something I called a “Pleasant Review.”

Anyway, it turns out the reviews were not only pretty good on their own, but because of the positive nature of my writing, a lot of creators were asking if I had the time to have a look at their book. And just like any other hungry newb, I happily obliged to have a look and if I enjoyed, I’d write up a Pleasant Review, and support these creators any chance I could.

But the inevitable happened. Actually my friends, two inevitables happened!

1) I was running out of time and energy to keep up.
2) I was reading and rejecting certain books with an apology. Basically saying “I loved – this and this… but it’s really not my type of book.”

I hated hurting people in that way, but I had to stay true to myself and the readers so that I could always say – or tweet- to them with 100% complete honest that “ I back..” this book or that book. It went against the grain because most just expect a good review based on the back scratching principle.” I send you a book, and you write a good review and tell your friends. Then we’re even!”

But! I’m not a back scratcher and my back isn’t really that itchy…

So what does all this have to do with MS1?

ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING.

You see, I rolled and smoked a very fat joint as a tribute to MS1 before I started. I feel Doug Michel, the mind behind Monkey Squad One, would have it no other way.

And no, I don’t make personal statements about people… I’m making this assumption based on how awesome, funny, and clever Monkey Squad One is.

So let’s get to these awesome books and the details I’m willing to share with you…

When you open Monkey Squad One, you get the impression that this book is going to be a ton of fun to read.

When you open Monkey Squad One, you get the impression that this book is going to be a ton of fun to read. The art was right up my alley, and for a couple reasons. I loved the fact that Doug’s art is his own. Now what do I mean by that, you ask?

I loved the fact that Doug’s art is his own. His style, his characters, the landscapes, the inanimate objects, the shading, and angles are all gelled together so nicely.

I mean his style, his characters, the landscapes, the inanimate objects, the shading, and angles are all gelled together so nicely. Let’s face it, we’ve all read a book or two where one thing may be great and another is so bad it looks either out of place or- err… bad.

That sort of unnaturalness is nowhere to be found in MS1. I want to relate the whole world, in the series, consistency wise, to that which you’d find in animated cartoon series on television.

And while I’m on the topic of cartoons and MS1, Cartoon Network would be wise to throw Doug a blank check because they could make a killer cartoon on adult swim. From action, to gore, and all the way down to the laugh out loud humor; you’re going to find all of that in this book.

The writing is awesome and funny. Nuff said! Can’t really elaborate more than that.. Actually, I can! I think Doug is enlightened in some way shape or form. His stories are a serious blast of good times.

I think Doug is enlightened in some way shape or form. His stories are a serious blast of good times.

And there’s one more thing before I end this post, and I think it’s important when considering starting a new creator owned book. When Doug sent me these comics, actual comics – not digital – he sent me a lot of books. My point here is that there’s plenty of MS1 to read. You don’t have to worry about falling head over heels for a book only to have it end or run out of new issues to read.

Yep.

Please check out Monkey Squad One! You won’t regret it!

Till next time…

By Kyle Coleman

There are forces in motion here that are simply UNSTOPPABLE!!!

My Twitter career, so to speak, has been like anything else, a cycle of ups and downs. And while it truly is a garden of awesomeness it can also be filled with not-so-awesomeness. I’m ok with the cycle and the process and mainly because of the awesome fans I meet and the Pro’s like Jay Rosario at Unstoppable comics.

Jay gave me my first chance when I did my first Pleasant Review on Stormchasers. Not only am I still very grateful for the opportunity but even more ecstatic that I get a chance to continually get first looks as the Unstoppable teams continue to put out more and more fantastic books that truly shatter the status quo in comics. From their ever evolving quest to keep the diversity alive in comics, to the gripping storylines and the fantastic art; Unstoppable has kept raising the bar and by my estimate, they will continue to raise that bar.

The story from the first issue has kept me on the edge of my seat and I can’t stress enough the joy I get from reading these creator owned hero stories.

So Unstoppable sent me Stormchasers #6 to have a sneak peak at before they hit up the New York Comic Con and I must say the book is just as fantastic as everything else they’ve sent me. The story from the first issue has kept me on the edge of my seat and I can’t stress enough the joy I get from reading these creator owned hero stories.

Cover to Stormchasers #6

So if you’re tired of the monotonous corporate hero scene, then you’ll find Stormchasers as refreshing as I did. That’s a @ComicsKyle guarantee!

If you’re tired of the monotonous corporate hero scene, then you’ll find Stormchasers as refreshing as I did.

So until next time,

Keep kicking ass, Fam!

And if you’re by NYCC, stop by and say hello to Unstoppable Comics!

Brahm Revel’s “Guerillas”, those hairy apes gently coaxed Kyle back into the medium of comics…and who could resist!

You know, it’s really been a struggle to come out with a debut piece that I’m comfortable with, to start this new chapter in my life. Having a blog space on Inter-Comics is a big deal to me and it’s important for me to really throw everything I have into the projects that I’m working on with my friends. So my concern was always about giving it my all and putting out a post that You the reader will enjoy. I was trying too hard I think!

But there was another factor…

You see, there are a lot of smart comic fans, authors, artists, bloggers, and all around awesome people who also call Inter-Comics their home! Their skill level will bring me up, no doubt. It’s really an exciting time for me.

So I decided, instead of posting one of the four opening pieces I wrote for my debut, that I was going to just sit down in my studio with a hot cup of coffee, a king size spliff of OG Kush, and I was going to sit here and just write you, the reader a little message saying hello!

Hello!

About me: I grew up down the street from Larry’s Comics and obviously fell in love with comics. I started to wander away from comics till I completely forgot about the medium in general. Then one day I stumbled across Brahm Revel’s Guerillas. The rest is history!

I’m an indie guy and I’ll buy an Oni book I’ve never heard of over any other comic in the store.

The Secret History of DB Cooper, written and drawn by Brian Churilla.

My current favorites include: Guerillas, The Secret History of DB Cooper, The Sixth Gun, Wasteland, Rachel Rising, Walking Dead, Edison Rex, and Monkey Squad (which a review will be posted for soon…)

I plan on keeping this blog light and upbeat. I’ll talk about whatever. Feel free to leave me a comment if you want me to cover something.

Anyway, that’s my message. I hope all is well and I hope you’ll come back and keep checking out my blog on Inter-Comics!

BLESSED LOVE!

Kyle

P.S. I’ve always just conceded to never be able to do realistic sketches until just recently. I went to the library yesterday and picked up a couple books on the subject. Below is my first sketch. Still holding on to the toon aspect you can see… Hey I’m a work in progress!

Check out the upcoming Sketch Battles to see more of Kyles artwork!
