We all love Image comics. Or at least that’s the impression giving the ever staggering prices of their back issues, with Walking Dead hitting a crazy £1000 minimum and the more recent Peter Panzerfaust issue #1 achieving an equally impressive £100 minimum price tag given it’s age. So it is understandable that those who missed out of the first issue and don’t have a spare few hundred pounds waiting to be thrown on eBay would want to know what the fuss is about. It’s also a great way to assess whether or not it is worth investing in the graphic novels.

“Image firsts” has always provided that medium. And with price in mind it’s “$1 editions” make them even more unavoidable to the curiosity part of our brains. Coming out May 1st are six new titles to add to the already 31 strong collection:

Peter Panzerfaust – A somewhat more gritty and “realistic” (in a loose sense) re-imagining of Peter Pan as an American boy in World War II France.

The aforementioned Peter Panzerfaust – A somewhat more gritty and “realistic” (in a loose sense) re-imagining of Peter Pan as an American boy in World War II France.

Bedlam – A mentally unstable mass murderer, much to the stylings of the Joker, who has turned a new leaf and now wants to help the city he once bathed in blood.

Bedlam – A mentally unstable mass murderer, much to the stylings of the Joker, who has turned a new leaf and now wants to help the city he once bathed in blood.

Super Dinosaur – Written by the creator of Walking Dead this is an all-ages comic about a T-Rex who is smothered in robotics and weaponry and his friend Derek Dynamo.

Morning Glories – The cult comic revolving around a bizarre academy that has trapped, tortured and turned it’s students against each other for mysterious reasons unknown.

Mind The Gap – A supernatural mystery that follows Elle Peterssen and her quest to discover discover who she is and why someone tried to kill her while she lays in a coma.

Morning Glories – The cult comic revolving around a bizarre academy that has trapped, tortured and turned it’s students against each other for mysterious reasons unknown.

Great Pacific – A wealthy Texan claims a floating island of garbage twice the size of Texas as his problem to solve. I don’t know much about this one not having read it but it does seem more interesting than I am probably making it sound.

Also make sure that you don’t miss out on the upcoming comics “Ten Grand” and “Lazarus” if you want to own some true image firsts.

Also make sure that you don’t miss out on the upcoming comics “Ten Grand” and “Lazarus” if you want to own some true image firsts.

It is a well know fact that Brian K. Vaughan has the Midas touch. With astounding works like Runaways, Y: The Last Man, Ex-Machina and the most recent Saga, people can’t help but buy his works with high hopes and for myself at least he has never disappointed. So when it was announced that he and famed artist Marcos Martín would be working together again (see Doctor Strange: The Oath) on a new creator owned comic my excitement began to kick in.

So far they have merely teased us with three images, each posted to a different site.

Hopefully we will know more about this project soon but so far this is all the world seems to know and yet it was plenty to grab my attention.

UPDATE

Coloured by Munsta Vicente the title of this series is “The Private Eye” and is available now as digital PDF, CBR, or CBZ with both a positive and a negative to that. The negative first being that there are no plans to ever release this in a hard copy format meaning no way to add it to your collection. The positive being that you can “name your price” with no minimum, but please let’s not use this as an excuse to skimp. The profits made from this issue will fund the next in line so we need to ensure that happens.

SPOILERS CONTAINED WITHIN!

A chromium cover? I don’t think I have bought one of these since the 90′s, and it brings forth both a pleasant trip down memory lane and an embarrassed chuckle. There’s just something about it that feels quite tacky to me but I am unsure why. Visually it works and I can’t help but take greater care with it as though the shine coincides with value. Still, it’s an interesting throwback that reminds me of how long it has been since I read a comic with Ultron in it. I also mentioned at the top that this review contains spoilers but I do feel as though the comic itself should have come with the same warning. I will get into that later.

The main Achilles’ heel with this kind of setting is that it must allow for the Marvel Universe to “heal” again.

The story drops us right in the middle of a new world. The one we knew has gone and in it’s rubble grows a monstrosity of technology casting it’s shadow across the devastation left by a seemingly great war. Instantly alarm bells rang as I read the first few pages. The main Achilles’ heel with this kind of setting is that it must allow for the Marvel Universe to “heal” again. It could never undergo such drastic changes without some sort of event acting as a cosmic reset button since no amount of damage control could rebuild an entire world. Time travel, it seems, is unavoidable in this tale. I could be wrong of course, and by god I hope I am, but right now to me this feels like a certainty.

The most frustrating part of this issue however was Peter Parker’s character.

As far as artwork goes I was equally unsold. I personally enjoy comic art to be bold and crisp such as the work of Stuart Immonen or Humberto Ramos. The work that penciler Bryan Hitch, inker Paul Neary, and colorist Paul Mounts have done for “Age Of Ultron” complements the atmosphere of the tale brilliantly but I just didn’t enjoy a large quantity of the panels. There’s a huge amount of detail in some panels where the line-work and shadows are so dense that it brings me right back to the 90′s, where as others seem to lack detail entirely. The angle of the scene where Emma Frost first appears would, in my opinion, have been better if it was an upward shot to complement Peter Parker’s view. That particular panel was frustratingly bare to me although I am sure I am the only person in the world that it bothered.

The angle of the scene where Emma Frost first appears would, in my opinion, have been better if it was an upward shot to complement Peter Parker’s view. That particular panel was frustratingly bare to me although I am sure I am the only person in the world that it bothered.

The most frustrating part of this issue however was Peter Parker’s character. The dialogue was witty, with great banter between characters. It was the Parker we all love and it was great to see him back on form. One problem. Parker has not been “himself” recently in the “Superior Spider-man” series. This brings me to the “spoiler” I feel this comic contains. I refuse to believe that Bendis has no idea on the recent happenings in the Spider-man character, and even if he had somehow managed to be completely oblivious, someone in the process would have been sure to correct him during the proof reading phase. We all know that Parker will no doubt end up in his own body again as is repeatedly hinted at even by himself (Superior Spider-man #5 – “when I get that body back I’ll have to work off an Otto Octavious-sized gut!”) but to have it dangled in front of us in the future world it takes away the feeling of “what if”. Again, there is always the possibility that I have misread the situation and it’s entirely possible that Parker’s and Otto’s minds merge into one in a strange twist of fate and this is the outcome we are seeing. Who knows. Right now however it feels like a slip up of sorts.

The dialogue was witty, with great banter between characters.

As a whole the comic is intriguing and I will definitely be buying the rest of the run. Especially with the fact that Joe Quesada will be drawing the final pages of Age Of Ultron himself. The art not being to my personal tastes aside it really isn’t as bad as I have perhaps made it sound. I’m just hoping the world being fixed at the end (still betting on time travel) won’t leave me feeling like I have just watched an “it was all a dream” episode from a bad sitcom.

The world of music and comics make regular collisions and sometimes with amazing results. It’s strange to think that even if you aren’t necessarily a fan of someone’s music you can still enjoy their comics. For me this was “Umbrella Academy”. Nothing against “My Chemical Romance” but they are not for me. But when “Umbrella Academy” came out I was totally side-swept. Hopefully this one will fair as well as some of it’s predecessors. “Raised By Raptors” is a comic written by “Bring Me The Horizon” front man Olli Sykes and drawn by illustrator and graphic designer Ben Ashton-Bell.

I bet for a second you thought I was going to be talking about the upcoming title “The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys” by Gerard Way didn’t you? No?….you read the title?….oh…

The story of “Raised By Raptors” appears to revolve around a young woman who is banished and hunted by her tribe and ends up joining a pack of Velociraptors who take her in as one of their own. Based in a fictional world where dinosaurs co-exist along side a Mayan Civilization this already peaked my interest. The fact that I personally am a big fan of “Bring Me The Horizon” also helps but, if past experiences are anything to go by, this is not necessary to get into the tale. What first grabbed me was the main image used on the kickstarter page that had an almost Tank Girl feel mixed with some old school tattoo design mixed in there too. You probably picked up on the word “kickstarter” there. Yes this is as indie as it gets. No label as such and completely self funded this could either be a future collectors item or a total flop. Let’s hope it isn’t the latter, mostly because I myself am already an investor and am hoping for more to come from this title.

The story of “Raised By Raptors” appears to revolve around a young woman who is banished and hunted by her tribe and ends up joining a pack of Velociraptors who take her in as one of their own.

To get a hard-copy of the comic you will be looking at a minimum of £10 (postage to the UK included) but larger donations come with posters, t-shirts, signed copies, and more. With any luck it will become popular enough to be reprinted under a label as to make it more accessible to the masses but for now pop online and get yourself a little treat. Full disclosure though I have ZERO idea on how good this will be and am relying purely on crossed fingers.
