ONI PRESS WEEK – “SCOTT PILGRIM AND THE ONI DIFFERENCE”

By Timothy Conroy

Scott Pilgrim, created and drawn by Brian Lee O’Malley.

Oni week is happening here at Inter-comics and arguably their biggest property, the name of probably their biggest character, is Scott Pilgrim, created and drawn by Brian Lee O’Malley.

Now, I would hazard to guess that most people, like myself, first heard of the character, when they were BLOWN away by the first trailer to the awesomely amazing movie that came out.

Now, I would hazard to guess that most people, like myself, first heard of the character, when they were BLOWN away by the first trailer to the awesomely amazing movie that came out. My jaw hit the floor, video games had never had a good rep being converted into movies and here was this, from out of no where, perfectly formed and capturing the very essence of videogames anyone who grew up in the 16 bit era could relate to …

This was no videogame character I had heard of.

So the movie came around, it was great, the 6 year old Sega megadrive/genesis fan squeed with excitement throughout, and after I had a new favourite movie

“The dialogue in that movie is the freshest and most original I’ve seen in a long time!”

Little did I know where most of the dialogue had come from …

Discovering that there was a Scott Pilgrim comic book was like falling in love all over again

Discovering that there was a Scott Pilgrim comic book was like falling in love all over again, here were all the characters I enjoyed so much, presented to me in a fresh new way. And not only that, it was a 7 volume manga style book, something I could actually get the first volume of and then not have to cry at the expense of getting the rest of the series.

Obviously the movie was based on the books and when I got to sit down and read them I was very excited to see what the movie had managed to keep from the books, what had changed and most importantly, what was missing altogether.

Now as much as I loved the movie there was one character missing from the books, Mr Chau!

Now as much as I loved the movie there was one character missing from the books, Mr Chau! Mr Chau is the father of a character from both the movie and the books, Knives Chau, Scott’s teenage schoolgirl sometimes girlfriend. The main plot of Scott Pilgrim is obviously boy meets girl, girls ex’s try to kill boy in a wholly irreverent fashion but one trick the movie missed with not having knives dad in the picture, the non English speaking father disapproving of his young daughter’s relation ship with her older boyfriend, was a missed trick in my eyes. Forget fighting your girlfriend’s evil ex’s (and oooo evil they are!) There is nothing more terrifying in life than a girl’s father, especially if they are coming after you with a SAMURAI SWORD!!!

That tangent to me though is the point of this post, the Oni difference. Whether it’s a young male overloaded with videogame culture, monkeys fighting in the jungle or WW2 super secret agents, I think that’s what Oni does best. Despite the overtones, fantasy trappings and off the wall characters, the experiences our characters face and the underlying stories that are told we can always relate to them, we can always say to ourselves we’ve been there or we’ve experienced a little bit of that. The authors, you can just tell, despite the window dressings, are loading these stories up with their own experiences, their own lives, these aren’t just creators who are making stuff up they’ve no idea about, these are creators who have lived it. And to me that’s the Oni difference.

So if Scott Pilgrim is your only exposure to an Oni book, that’s ok, but there are more out there and each is as different to the other as the next, but they all hold that same truth to it, the Oni difference.

I hope you check out some more by them in the future. Or you know, whatever :p (Scott Pilgrim reference haha @radiomaru would approve)

Ps This author has never been chased by anybody with a samurai sword … Ever.

Yet.

SKETCH BATTLE 9 – ‘FOUR PANEL COMIC’

By Timothy Conroy

Update: And that’s Sketch battle 9 over! Thank you everyone for checking us out, supporting our relaunch here on Inter-comics and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! Huge shout out has to go to Lee at Inter-comics for helping us set up at our new home and making the transition so easy and enjoyable, so thank you Lee. Also a big shout out to Doug at Monkey squad one for going above and beyond with all the retweets and shout outs on tweeter, thank you Doug!

Onto the winner though!

We hope people got the idea behind the split vote as talent comes in many forms and we hope it encourages different types of creative people to take part in future, as for this time both categories were ruled over by one artist.

Announcing the winner of both the art and writing categories, William Haders!

Born from a child-hood idea, William’s piece introduces us to the ringmaster who introduces one of his circus acts the Blub. Maintaining a strong lead from the start with the art, people seemed to really be drawn to the level of quality and effort of the hand applied effort of the inking and colours. Whilst going nearly neck and neck all week on the best writing vote, William just pulled ahead on the best written vote with his clear and deadpan dialogue.

Be sure to keep up to date with William on twitter at @doubleduece45 and also his upcoming comic convention, Cincy comic con. Head on over to their twitter page right now to win a piece of art from superstar artist Tony Moore!

Follow us on facebook and twitter and we hope to see you all again for both Sketch battle 10 and 11!

Welcome to Sketch Battle 9!

As we are always looking to evolve these battles and push our artists forward, we decided this time to really open up the playing field! This time around is a Four panel comic competition. The challenge we set to our artists was this; within four panels tell a story. Voting though will be split into 2 categories! One for best art and the other for best story. Now not everyone is a grand master at drawing but that doesn’t mean they don’t have great ideas or great stories to tell! Going forward ALL our challenges will be split this way and we hope that encourages more people to take part and join us in getting creative!

Without further ado though. Here are the entrants in Sketch battle 9!
